About Tyndale University

We imagine Tyndale University as an integral part of the community around us. We imagine a future that includes Tyndale as a centre of learning embedded within our surrounding neighbourhood, and that unites living and learning in a way that is truly unique in Canadian higher education. We imagine a community-based hub that includes ravine preservation, community access, affordable housing, and sustainability as the driving principles.

Culturally diverse, multi-denominational, and committed to excellence in scholarship, Tyndale University has become a leading centre for faith-based education in Canada. Founded in 1894 as the Toronto Bible Training School, and later merging with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College, the school has remained faithful to its founding vision through mergers, moves, and several name changes. In 2003, as the result of a vigorous and thorough review by the Postsecondary Education Assessment Board (PEQAB), and their recommendation to the Ministry of Colleges & Universities that Tyndale has the ability to meet or exceed the requirements of delivering undergraduate and seminary/graduate programs, Tyndale was granted authority to offer a Bachelor of Arts degree. More recently, in early 2020, following another robust review by PEQAB and their recommendation to the Ministry, Ministerial consent was granted to use the name Tyndale University. Effective December 2020 Tyndale’s name was legally changed to Tyndale University.

The history of Tyndale is embodied in a legacy of faithful leadership, dedicated faculty and staff, and above all, in the stories of generations of students who have been formed and inspired for service and cultural engagement in this unique community of learning.

Tyndale University offers a wide array of accredited degree programs in undergraduate and graduate studies. In addition, Tyndale’s Bachelor of Education program, Doctor of Ministry Program, online learning opportunities, robust Summer School programs, flexible learning through on-campus and extensive virtual programs, and continuing education through the Open Learning Centre puts it on the forefront of Christian higher education. Tyndale delivers holistic education designed to prepare students for a broad range of professional, ministry and vocational contexts.

Our institutional mission statement says this:

Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.

Ths mission statement is woven into the heart and ethos of Tyndale, and will remain its legacy for generations to come.

Tyndale has been part of the Steeles/Bayview neighbourhood for almost 45 years, first on Ballyconnor Court beginning in 1976. Since 2015 Tyndale has fully occupied the beautiful grounds of 3377 Bayview Avenue, entrusted to us from the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The story of this property began with the Sisters of St. Joseph, who owned this property and who have committed themselves to assisting vulnerable people in our communities.

The story continued when we were able to acquirei this land and buildings from the Sisters in 2007, in part because of our shared commitment to faith, education, and being Christ’s presence in the world around us. During the time since we acquired this property, there have been numerous conversations at the Board and Cabinet levels about how to best steward the entire property, facilities, and buildings. The goal has never been to sell or develop property simply to gain cash. The goal has always been to steward and care for this property in ways that honour and align with our Mission, with our identity as a Christian university, and as a community contributing in meaningful ways to the City of Toronto.
